Q&A: Project Feasibility

Project feasibility is the assessment of a project’s elements to determine the project’s potential for success and is usually considered during a project approval process.

Feasibility assessments often look at whether an organization has the capacity to meet a project’s technical, economic (cost), legal or regulatory, operational, and time requirements.

Mission-driven organizations may want to assess the project’s Needs, Impacts, and Risks or Rewards related to:

  • People (our teams and stakeholders)

  • Effort (activities and work)

  • Resources (funding and equipment/tools)

  • Timeline (deadlines and time use)

  • Alignment (with our strategic priorities and values)

A simple assessment of project feasibility answers these questions:

  1. Is this project feasible, given our existing staff and resources?

  2. If not, and we need to build capacity in some way or get funding or resources, is that feasible?

  3. And if we already had that capacity or those resources, is this how they'd be best put to use by our organization?
