Q&A: Is it a project?

Q&A: Is it a project?

Is my activity/initiative/collaboration a “project”?

While the Project Management Institute defines a project quite broadly, most projects are:

  • Time-bound or temporary.

  • Create something unique or new.

  • Not a regular or existing part of your operations, programs, or services.

For most mission-driven organizations, projects involve creating or implementing a new system, program, service, or way of working. Projects are often tied to a strategic initiative or critical need or to grant or special funding (although our project deliverables may eventually become a sustainable part of our regular operations). And projects usually require that we create buy-in and inspire collaboration and action from diverse teams of staff, leaders, clients, users, partners, donors, and community members.
