Q&A: Managing your own tasks

Q&A: Managing your own tasks

How should I manage my own tasks?

There are so many tools and techniques for managing tasks and productivity, from to-do lists to time blocking.

Regardless of the format or structure, most task management approaches mirror project management best practices in suggesting that we:

  • Define a concrete deliverable: Clearly describe the task or outcome or the specific action to take, breaking larger or more abstract tasks into smaller tasks.

  • Set a concrete deadline: Set a due date or block time for each task.

  • Establish a scope or purpose: Understanding the “why” behind a task can motivate us to complete it.
