Q&A: Conflicting Schedules

How do we create a project schedule given the busy and conflicting schedules of our project team and key stakeholders or decision-makers?

Communication is key to juggling conflicting schedules.

First, ensure you have a clear project scope (ideally one that is tied to a larger mission) to create shared purpose and buy-in.

Then create a draft schedule that clearly denotes any inflexible project dates and when you expect to need support or engagement from various groups on the project.

Share that schedule for feedback (reminding everyone of the project scope). You won’t be able to accommodate everyone’s schedule and may need to prioritize the needs of certain groups or individuals at key stages, but you should be able to avoid many of the conflicts that could lead to delays.
